Name: Jovan Lim
Name of institution: eduSpace Learning Centre
Role: Founder

What made you choose to become a tutor?
To be honest, I have never thought of becoming one. I started having an interest in teaching when I was a researcher at A*STAR. I had to guide my interns in their programming & simulations and I enjoyed helping them to clear their doubts in the concepts. I was excited to help them make connections between what they have learnt and the real world and thus assisting them to make real life applications. I began to see that through teaching, I can make an impact in a person’s life. Teachers do make a difference and shape the future of the nation. And I want to be a part of this great mission.

What are the attributes needed for this role?
Patience, approachable, engaging, and a willingness to go the extra mile to simplify complex concepts into simple bite-sized knowledge which students can understand. In addition, as I was a platoon sergeant during my NS days, leading by example and professionalism have become the core values in my life. I am living out these beliefs now even as a Founder of eduSpace.

Tell us about your teaching experience.
I have taught the Integrated Programme students when I was working in A*STAR for four years. It was enjoyable working with them as I guided them along in their projects and taught them concepts relevant to their field of research. I have over 10 years’ experience of giving Math tuition to students ranging from primary to tertiary education. I specialise in teaching graduating students for Primary 6, Secondary 4 and Junior College. I guide graduating classes in my centre.

I am passionate about Mathematics and desire to make Maths fun and simple for my students. It gives me great joy and satisfaction to see my students scoring well in their examinations and celebrating their successes together.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in the course of your work? How do you deal with them?
Managing expectations and maintaining trust are the most crucial and challenging aspects of being a teacher. The parents and their children come in with different expectations and levels of motivation. Parents naturally would expect to see results within a short frame of time. I would try to manage their expectations by helping them to understand that for subjects like English and Literature, the marking scheme tends to be more subjective and the results may not be achieved overnight. For students who are less motivated, I would use varied modes of instructions to ignite their interest. Being patient and believing in each student also helps to increase their motivation. I firmly believe that communication and professionalism are key to building a trusting and constructive relationship.

What do you think makes your organisation a popular choice among parents?
We have an amazing vision coupled with the right resources and expertise. We believe that every child can learn and has the potential to excel. Our resources are up-to-date and in line with the MOE curriculum and customised to suit the differing abilities of the students to level them up. Most importantly, we have a pool of committed tutors who possess many years of experience in teaching and are willing to go the extra mile to assist our students. Many of our ex-students have commented that they were touched by the dedication of the teachers in eduSpace. Furthermore, the classroom environment is also extremely conducive for teaching and learning.

What advice do you have for parents who wish to enrol their child in your institution?
Sign your child up for a free trial class. Bring along your child’s past year examination papers or assignments and show them to our teachers. We’ll be happy to advise you on how best we can help! Take the first step and experience the difference in eduSpace!
