Academy of Literary Arts and Publishing Singapore

The Academy of Literary Arts and Publishing Singapore is the training arm of the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS). We conduct short courses, workshops and masterclasses in the fields of publishing, writing, reading and storytelling. Our workshops meet the training needs of publishing professionals, media employees and media freelancers.

We also reach out to educators, young adults, parents and hobbyists who wish to build their skills in these fields. Join us and keep up with the expansive growth of literary content across traditional, digital and multimedia platforms. Our local and international trainers from countries such as the United Kingdom, United States and Australia are established, credible professionals from the literary arts and publishing field.

Courses Offered

Whether you are a beginner, freelancer or professional, you will find a course that is suited to your experience and learning needs. Our trainers have several years of industry experience and will motivate you to push boundaries in your craft and work.

Storytelling
Storytelling time is not just for students. It is for adults too, as many teachers, parents and adults of various professions have learnt through our workshops. In addition to learning how to tell stories, our workshop participants also learn how to conceptualise, visualise and narrate or write their very own story. Come and polish your skills today!

Reading
Pick up reading techniques and skills which have been tried and tested by the experts. Do you want to know how to change your pitch, tone and breath to use your voice to its fullest extent to read aloud to others? Or, do you want to learn to ask the right prompting questions when reading a book to your child or student and stir up a conversation? Attend one of our workshops and see how the world of reading changes for you!

Writing
Whether you write for work or leisure, our writing courses will motivate you to fine-tune what you do! Published authors and writing coaches conduct workshops ranging from young adult fiction, fantasy fiction to creative non-fiction such as memoirs and feature articles. Learn what sets good writing apart from bad writing, discover your writing voice and how to organise and edit to bring everything together into a wholesome piece.

Publishing
Get introduced to the basic and advanced stages of copy-editing, learn strategies to turn print books into e-books and market them, as well as the essentials of copyright and contract laws. Our courses will help you better navigate the publishing world. Our workshops led by international editors and publishing professionals from overseas will help you hone your skills and expose you to different and rich perspectives and experiences.

Grants & Discounts

Participants can tap on several national funding schemes and SkillsFuture credit to attend our workshops.

MDA Talent Assistance Specialised Training Grant
Local (Singaporean/Permanent Resident) media practitioners, including fresh media graduates, attending/wishing to attend the approved courses could apply for the grant through the Six Degrees portal at least 21 calendar days before the course date. All grant applications are subject to approval from Six Degrees.

Capability Development Grant
The Capability Development Grant administered by the National Arts Council is open to individuals and organisations who have a strong track record of involvement in the arts at a professional level, and is able to demonstrate commitment to the long-term development of the arts in Singapore.

Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP) Funding
UTAP is an individual skills upgrading account specially for NTUC members. As a member, you enjoy UTAP funding at 50 percent of the unfunded course fee capped at S$250 every year.
